Fresno State retires Judge's No. 29: 'Pivotal years of my life'

Before Game 3 of the 2023 World Series on Oct. 30, Aaron Judge sat gleaming with pride at Chase Field as MLB presented him with the Roberto Clemente Award -- one of baseball’s most prestigious honors. The achievement reflects a player’s commitment to community excellence in the name of the late Roberto Clemente. The honor highlighted Judge’s achievements with his All Rise Foundation, a charity focused on giving back to communities in New York and California’s Central Valley, where Judge grew up

Gallen saves best for last with no-hit bid in Game 5

PHOENIX -- As Zac Gallen walked off the mound in the seventh inning of Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday night, his warmup song, “Let the Beat Build” by Lil Wayne, blared through the speakers at Chase Field. A symphony of cheers from the sellout crowd greeted him as he stepped into the D-backs dugout. The 28-year-old, whom D-backs fans have seen emerge into one of the best starters in the Majors, orchestrated the game of his life. With Arizona’s backs against the wall, Gallen carried a no

Carroll continues ROY chase as 4th rookie of 20/40 club

“It’s cool. It's a nice even number,” said Carroll, who flashed elite speed with his 30.4 ft/sec sprint around the bases during an attempted inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning -- foiled by Elly De La Cruz's insane 99.7 mph relay throw to the plate. “But, there’s a lot more season to go. We’re just focused on the next one.” The D-backs took three of four games against the Reds, who are also in the hunt for an NL Wild Card spot. Arizona holds a 1 1/2-game lead over Cincinnati (which hol

Hometown hero Gorman sparks Cards' bats with 2-HR showing

Gorman spoiled his mom on Wednesday afternoon, as the 23-year-old went 3-for-5 with two mammoth home runs in the Cardinals' 11-7 win over the D-backs in front of roughly 100 friends and family members who came to watch him play against his hometown team. “I was going through a little bit of struggles,” Gorman said. “[It’s] just about going out there and competing every pitch. Just look for a pitch to hit and be on time for it.” Gorman admitted that he didn’t get to attend many games at Chase F

High School Home Run Derby win a dream come true for Morlando

Little did he know the best scenario possible would end up happening in front of a sellout crowd at T-Mobile Park there for MLB's Home Run Derby, which took place after the high school edition. “There’s always the thought in the back of your head that you could be a champion,” Morlando said. “Just to be able to compete in front of as many people, this is a lifetime dream. This is the perfect scenario. Morlando beat Samuel Richardson from Olive Branch, Miss. The two aren’t strangers; they were

Jacob Wilson learned from MLB vet college coach -- his dad

At Grand Canyon University, he has been an integral part of the Lopes’ recent success. In his three-year tenure, Wilson has a slash line of .361/.419/.558 and has shown he can hold it down as a strong defensive shortstop. What stands out the most about Wilson’s career at GCU is his discipline at the plate. In 620 at-bats, he’s only struck out 31 times. Nineteen of those came during his freshman season. “I remember going to the Spring Training fields every day and going to the back fields and hi

Meet the two-sport athlete with Judge-ian power

“My goal has always been to play two sports until something inside me told me I couldn't play both, since I was probably 3 years old,” Robinson said. “I just want to make little me proud. As long as I'm having fun doing it and nothing inside of me is telling me I can't do it, I’m going to do it as long as I can.” “We feel like he's breaking down a barrier for players to follow,” Dominic said. “We really want to speak out for the kid who's 12, 13, 14 years old and is thinking that he has to choo

Pham bypasses chance at 5th hit for teammate's WS debut

PHOENIX -- Tommy Pham and Jace Peterson have adjacent lockers in the D-backs' clubhouse at Chase Field. The duo has spent nearly the same amount of time in the Majors, but they had never played together until they were both acquired by Arizona at the Trade Deadline. “We always talked about playing in the World Series,” Pham said. “Me and [Peterson] have close to nine years of service. So it took us close to nine years to get to the World Series. This opportunity doesn't come so often.” The two

49ers’ lauded defense sliced up by Mahomes in loss to Chiefs

SANTA CLARA — Many 49ers defenders have taken pride in being the NFL’s best defense. But in Sunday afternoon’s loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, it looked like one of the worst units in the league. The 49ers were healthier than last week. Nick Bosa returned from a groin injury. Charvarius Ward played Sunday against his former team after exiting last week’s game with an injury. Injury-plagued Jimmie Ward was seen all over the secondary with a cast over his fractured left hand.
